How to judge a dog harness
A harness for everyday walking and a harness for vehicle safety solve different problems. The label, price, and number of reviews do not tell the whole story.
Fit comes first
A harness should allow normal movement without rubbing, pinching, or restricting the shoulders. Follow the manufacturer’s measuring instructions and check the fit again after adjustment. A dog that can back out of the harness needs a different fit or design.
Walking is not crash testing
A product can work well for ordinary walks without being appropriate for a car. Vehicle restraints face forces that normal walking equipment does not. Look for specific evidence of vehicle testing and read what the test actually covers. Do not treat vague phrases such as “car safe” as proof.
What to compare
- Measurement range and adjustment points
- Where the leash attaches
- Ease of putting it on correctly
- Material, stitching, buckles, and visible wear points
- Manufacturer instructions and warranty
- Independent testing, if the product makes a safety claim
