A practical dog travel checklist

The easiest way to make a dog trip less stressful is to prepare the boring details before leaving. Use the checklist below as a starting point, then adjust it for your dog and destination.

Before leaving

• Confirm the destination allows dogs and check fees or restrictions.
• Check vaccination, identification, and destination requirements.
• Make sure your dog’s tag and microchip information are current.
• Practice using the crate, carrier, or vehicle harness.
• Find veterinary clinics near the destination and along the route.

Pack these basics

• Food and extra food
• Water and a travel bowl
• Leash, collar, ID tag, and harness
• Waste bags and cleaning supplies
• Medication and basic first-aid supplies
• Blanket, bed, or familiar toy
• Medical and vaccination records
• Secure travel restraint

During the trip
